Bird Proofing FAQs

Bird proofing has become an important part of protecting premises against mess and nuisance but we're aware it may not always be clear why we take a certain approach according to circumstances. Hopefully this section will help clarify the processes we use.

Bird Proofing FAQs

What type of proofing is best?
Every problem and situation is unique and different methods suit different situations. That’s why we offer free advice and/or surveys.

Aren’t birds protected by law?
Yes, they most definitely are. That’s why you should use a professional and knowledgeable company, we always operate within the terms of The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and use licences issued by DEFRA where appropriate. Getting this wrong carries maximum penalties of 2 Years and/or £40,000.

Are Pigeons classed as vermin?
No, all birds are equally protected under the law. Pigeons and a few other species can be easier to deal with than others but you need to fully understand the regulations to be sure you are operating legally. Getting this wrong carries maximum penalties of 2 Years and/or £40,000.

Can I remove eggs and nests?
Generally no, but in certain circumstances it can be done under DEFRA licence. We always operate legally and ethically. Getting this wrong carries maximum penalties of 2 Years and/or £40,000.

If I’m confident I can tick all the boxes, then can I shoot pigeons in my own garden?
Yes you can but if an air pellet is fired beyond the boundaries of your premises then an offence has been committed, if the police turn up it will be the Firearms Team and they won’t be smiling.

If you are accessing my roof will I need scaffolding?
Not usually, we can manage the vast majority of domestic work with ladders and roof crawlers, for more difficult jobs we operate our own Hinowa 14.7 spider lift (cherry picker).

Are your methods for solar panels approved by manufacturers and installers?
Yes, we work with several installers and can supply a method statement which has never yet been refused.

Solar panels are like magnets to Feral Pigeons, they offer shelter and security along with a high degree of safety for nesting and raising a family. For a pigeon, it’s difficult to find a more attractive home but from our point of view it’s difficult to imagine a less attractive tenant!

Canada Geese
Canada Geese

First introduced to Britain in the 17th century, the lack of natural predators and abundance of food has seen this specie’s population grow to the point where it is often referred to as a pest.

Ground Nesting Birds

If you have any kind of project planned which involves ground disturbance, at certain times of the year you need to take into account the possibility of ground nesting birds.

Gulls
Gulls

When hunting for food or protecting their nests gulls can be incredibly aggressive. If you’re unlucky enough to have them nest on your property you’ll know what a threat they can be when they’re looking after their eggs or young. Even if it’s just a regular loafing spot the mess beneath can be enormous.

House Martins

These migratory birds are only a problem for a limited time each year but if you have a few of them nest above your door you’ll certainly appreciate the problems they cause.

Pigeons
Pigeons

The Feral Pigeon (Columba Livia) is descended from the Rock Dove and is a natural cliff dweller, as such it is perfectly at home in our towns and cities because it sees each building as just another cliff to be colonised.
